Why You Should See a Registered Dietician

Nutrition affects mental health. Did you know that you could be eating a healthy balanced diet, but not fully benefit from it because your body is unable to absorb enough of the nutrients? Nutrition affects mental health. Did you know that you could be eating a healthy balanced diet, but not fully benefit from it because your body is unable to absorb enough of the nutrients? Did you know that a lot of people are allergic to milk but are unaware? Also, if you don’t maintain consistent glucose levels, it can lead to spikes and lows that mimic symptoms of anxiety and depression. A Registered Dietitian can help you track your diet and pay attention to signs that you may not have previously noticed.

Registered Dietitians (RDs) are credentialed and regulated professionals in the field of nutrition. They can talk with you about your specific concerns and personal goals and assist you with coming up with a workable plan that helps you reach your goals. I emphasize workable because your goal might be improvement, not perfection. Yes, certain foods may not be good for you, but you may not be ready to let them go. RD's tend to know tricks and tips that might could make improving your diet more enjoyable rather than a source of dread. This is especially helpful with picky eaters, such as kids.

When it comes to food and supplements there’s a lot of information out there and it’s easy to get confused or misled. RD’s help you navigate the maze of misinformation and make choices that are tailored to your personal needs. RD’s help with digestive issues and health conditions, weight concerns, eating for athletic goals, hormonal concerns, specific dietary needs and intolerances, and making healthy diet changes in general.

I’m not saying that diet is the only piece of the puzzle, but plays a part. What if some of your anxiety/depression/irritability, etc. could be alleviated by dietary changes? What if you could trade in some prescription pills for some fruits and vegetables? What if there's a way for you to flavor your vegetables so that you could actually enjoy them? You will never know until you dare to talk to an RD and see how they can be of help to you personally. Many offer consultations, accept insurance, and offer telehealth appointments.

If you’re interested in seeing a Registered Dietician, start with confirming coverage in your insurance plan. Then explore your options from there. It's important that you work with someone within your budget who's personality and methods resonate with you. Here are some internet-based directories to aid in your search.
